Did you know puppies are made up of 75% water? Puppy diarrhea is a common symptom of many illnesses and when little puppies have diarrhea they’re losing water faster than they can keep it in. If not handled swiftly and effectively, it could cost the puppy its life. Our Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Bramlage (aka Dr. B), just released a new webinar, Puppy Diarrhea: Beyond Antibiotics, that details the common causes of puppy diarrhea like parasites, parvovirus, coronavirus, rotavirus, E.coli, and clostridium. During the free one-hour video presentation, Dr. B talks about diagnosing, treating, and preventing diarrhea, with a focus on managing dehydration risks and not over-treating with antibiotics.

Prevention is Key

Puppy diarrhea and GI issues are the second leading cause of puppy loss in the first week. So what steps can we take to prevent it? Dr. B gives a deworming schedule for puppies and moms to prevent diarrhea caused by parasites. He also talks about puppy shots and vaccinating moms to prevent diseases that cause puppy diarrhea. Other management methods he covers are getting moms to milk well, using probiotics in gruel and managing stress during the transition to next home. All these things help puppies maintain a healthy, balanced gut and reduce instances of diarrhea in puppies.
