PROTAZIL® (diclazuril) is supplied as oral pellets containing 1.56% diclazuril to be mixed as a top-dress in feed. Inert ingredients include dehydrated alfalfa meal, wheat middlings, cane molasses and propionic acid (preservative).
Store between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
PROTAZIL® Antiprotozoal Pellets are formulated for horses to help manage infections caused by Sarcocystis neurona, the protozoal organism responsible for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM). These pellets provide a convenient oral formulation to support consistent dosing in horses diagnosed with or at risk for EPM.
The active ingredient in PROTAZIL® works by targeting the protozoal organism to help reduce clinical signs associated with EPM, including neurological deficits and incoordination. Administration is oral, allowing for easy delivery with feed or directly to the horse under veterinary guidance.
PROTAZIL® Antiprotozoal Pellets should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan under veterinary supervision, with dosage and duration based on the horse's weight and clinical condition.
PROTAZIL should not be used in horses with known hypersensitivity to diclazuril. It is strictly for horses only and is not intended for use in animals entering the human food chain.
The safety profile in breeding horses, pregnant, or lactating mares has not been established, and concurrent use with other therapies has not been evaluated; therefore its use under such conditions requires veterinary judgment.
No significant adverse effects were observed in field trials at the recommended dose, but horses should be monitored during therapy.
There were no adverse effects noted in the field study which could be ascribed to diclazuril.
Disposal of Unused Prescription Medications
- Return unwanted or unused medications to Revival Animal Health in person, or visit www.disposemymeds.org to find a pharmacy near you.
- A secondary method of drug disposal is to remove the unwanted medication from any wrappers or containers and place it in a plastic bag with moist coffee grounds or cat litter. This can be disposed of in the regular garbage collection.
- Please do NOT dispose of unwanted meds down the drain or toilet, as this may eventually find its way into the human water supply.

Disposal of Medical Sharps
- When you're finished with the syringe and needle, do not try to recap, remove, bend or break the needle. This is where most injuries occur.
- Dispose the syringe and needle immediately in a nearby sharps container. All sharps must be deposited in a puncture-proof container. Make sure your storage location is child and animal proof.
- As with all product handling, make sure you wash your hands after handling medical sharps.
Disposal of Sharps Container
- When your sharps container is half-full, sift dry Portland Cement throughout the sharps. Fill the container with water, and rotate until the cement is mixed and the sharps have been distributed throughout the cement mixture. Let cement dry for 24 hours.
- Seal the lid of the container tightly and use duct tape to seal. Label the container "Livestock Sharps" to properly identify the contents.
- Dispose of the containers in accordance with your state's regulations.
