Prascend® tablets contain pergolide for horses. These pergolide tablets for horses are used as a treatment for Cushings disease in horses to control clinical signs associated with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) also known as equine Cushings disease.
Prascend® for horses is a dopamine receptor agonist. Prascend® 1 mg tablets are for use in horses only.
Side Effects: Prascend® side effects in horses are rare. Prascend®: appears to be well tolerated in horses. Rare side effects may include lethargy, colic, diarrhea and weight loss. Decreased appetite may be seen during the first week of therapy.
Warnings: Do not use in horses that are allergic to Prascend® or other ergot-derivatives.
Do not use in horses that are to be used for human consumption.
Use with caution in horses that are pregnant, lactating or used for breeding. Safe use in these animals has not yet been evaluated.
Prascend® is approximately 90% associated with plasma proteins. Use caution if administering Prascend® with other drugs that affect protein binding. Dopamine antagonists, such as neuroleptics (phenothiazines, domperidone) or metoclopramide, ordinarily should not be administered concurrently with Prascend® (a dopamine agonist) since these agents may diminish the effectiveness of Prascend®.
Not for use in humans. Prascend® should not be administered by persons who have had adverse reactions to ergotamine or other ergot derivatives. Pregnant or lactating women should wear gloves when administering this product. It has been reported that pergolide tablets may cause eye irritation, an irritating smell, or headache when Prascend® tablets are split or crushed. Prascend® tablets should not be crushed due to the potential for increased human exposure and care should be taken to minimize exposure when splitting tablets. Consult a physician in case of accidental ingestion by humans.
Keep Prascend® in a secure location out of reach of dogs, cats, and other animals to prevent accidental ingestion or overdose. Dogs have eaten Prascend® tablets that were placed in food intended for horses or dropped during administration of the tablets to the horses. Adverse reactions may occur if animals other than horses ingest Prascend® tablets.
Overdoses can be very dangerous. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
This medication should only be given to the horse for whom it was prescribed.
Disposal of Unused Prescription Medications
- Return unwanted or unused medications to Revival Animal Health in person, or visit www.disposemymeds.org to find a pharmacy near you.
- A secondary method of drug disposal is to remove the unwanted medication from any wrappers or containers and place it in a plastic bag with moist coffee grounds or cat litter. This can be disposed of in the regular garbage collection.
- Please do NOT dispose of unwanted meds down the drain or toilet, as this may eventually find its way into the human water supply.

Disposal of Medical Sharps
- When you're finished with the syringe and needle, do not try to recap, remove, bend or break the needle. This is where most injuries occur.
- Dispose the syringe and needle immediately in a nearby sharps container. All sharps must be deposited in a puncture-proof container. Make sure your storage location is child and animal proof.
- As with all product handling, make sure you wash your hands after handling medical sharps.
Disposal of Sharps Container
- When your sharps container is half-full, sift dry Portland Cement throughout the sharps. Fill the container with water, and rotate until the cement is mixed and the sharps have been distributed throughout the cement mixture. Let cement dry for 24 hours.
- Seal the lid of the container tightly and use duct tape to seal. Label the container "Livestock Sharps" to properly identify the contents.
- Dispose of the containers in accordance with your state's regulations.
