Depo-Medrol® is a long-acting corticosteroid indicated for use in dogs, cats, and horses to help manage inflammation and immune-mediated conditions. In dogs and horses, it is used for musculoskeletal disorders such as acute localized arthritis, generalized arthritis, traumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis, helping relieve pain and lameness. The duration of symptom relief may vary depending on the underlying cause and the extent of structural degeneration.
Depo-Medrol® is also indicated for allergic conditions in dogs and cats, including pruritus, allergic dermatitis, acute moist dermatitis, dry eczema, urticaria, bronchial asthma, pollen sensitivities, and otitis externa. In horses, it can provide supportive therapy for inflammatory conditions, including acute musculoskeletal inflammation, laminitis, and other stress-related inflammatory disorders. Relief from inflammation and discomfort may begin within hours to days and persist for several days up to six weeks, depending on the species and individual response.
In all species, Depo-Medrol® may be used as supportive therapy in severe infections or conditions where inflammation, swelling, or scar tissue formation is a concern. This includes management of snakebite in dogs and horses, helping reduce swelling and prevent tissue damage, and improving overall comfort during recovery. Administration should be under veterinary guidance, with dosing and duration tailored to the animal's species, weight, and clinical condition.
System therapy with methylprednisolone acetate, as with other corticoids, is contraindicated in animals with arrested tuberculosis, peptic ulcer, and Cushing's syndrome. The presence of active tuberculosis, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, renal insufficiency, predisposition to thrombophlebitis, hypertension, or congestive heart failure necessitates carefully controlled use of corticosteroids.
Intrasynovial, intratendinous, or other injections of corticosteroids for local effect are contraindicated in the presence of acute infectious conditions. Exacerbation of pain, further loss of joint motion, with fever and malaise following injection may indicate that the condition has become septic.
Clinical and experimental data have demonstrated that corticosteroids administered orally or parenterally to animals may induce the first stage of parturition when administered during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature parturition followed by dystocia, fetal death, retained placenta and metritis. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits, and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in cleft palate in offspring. Corticosteroids administered to dogs during pregnancy have also resulted in other congenital anomalies, including deformed forelegs, phocomelia, and anasarca.
Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. Not for human use.
Side effects that usually are not serious include greater appetite, thirst and need to urinate, vomiting, diarrhea, mild behavioral changes and excessive panting in dogs. After using the drug for several weeks or more: greater thirst, need to urinate, and appetite, weight gain, pot belly, skin or coat changes, hair loss, weakness; any of which may mean the dose is too high.
Side effects that may be serious include an unwillingness to eat, high fever, black tarry stools or bloody vomit. These may signal a stomach or intestinal ulcer developing. Weight loss despite having an appetite could indicate the development of diabetes mellitus. Aggressive or threatening behaviors. Infection may develop when used at high doses.
Disposal of Unused Prescription Medications
- Return unwanted or unused medications to Revival Animal Health in person, or visit www.disposemymeds.org to find a pharmacy near you.
- A secondary method of drug disposal is to remove the unwanted medication from any wrappers or containers and place it in a plastic bag with moist coffee grounds or cat litter. This can be disposed of in the regular garbage collection.
- Please do NOT dispose of unwanted meds down the drain or toilet, as this may eventually find its way into the human water supply.

Disposal of Medical Sharps
- When you're finished with the syringe and needle, do not try to recap, remove, bend or break the needle. This is where most injuries occur.
- Dispose the syringe and needle immediately in a nearby sharps container. All sharps must be deposited in a puncture-proof container. Make sure your storage location is child and animal proof.
- As with all product handling, make sure you wash your hands after handling medical sharps.
Disposal of Sharps Container
- When your sharps container is half-full, sift dry Portland Cement throughout the sharps. Fill the container with water, and rotate until the cement is mixed and the sharps have been distributed throughout the cement mixture. Let cement dry for 24 hours.
- Seal the lid of the container tightly and use duct tape to seal. Label the container "Livestock Sharps" to properly identify the contents.
- Dispose of the containers in accordance with your state's regulations.
