Love Your Bird: Salem the Sports Fanatic

Salem is the smartest, most loving bird (African Grey). His verbal skills are absolutely amazing. He is a die hard Mets fan and loves to watch the games and he cheers them on with a hearty ‘Let’s Go Mets!’ Jose Reyes is his favorite player and he sings his at bat song when he sees him.

We recently bought him Pure Fun™ and it’s now his favorite treat. When he wants it he runs over to the bag and pokes it while yelling ‘Want Cookie!’ He then sticks his head in the bag so he pick out what he wants.

He also is a very kissy bird, always asking for and receiving kisses. He is my child and I can’t imagine life without him!

Love Your Bird: Monkeylike Mica

Mica is the sweetest loving bird (cockatiel). She can’t fly, but she gets around by telling you what she wants, either with head bobs or jumping, walking or running. She climbs like a little monkey too. She is about 10 years old. She gives kisses, lays on my chest for scratches, sleeps on my shoulder and just overall loves being with us. Love her with all my heart!

Love Your Bird: Buzz the Small Bird with a Big Personality

Buzz, a cockatiel, was the only survivor of a clutch of four eggs. Since he looked like a buzzard, I named him ‘Buzz.’ He grew to adulthood but was a runt. Buzz was small but didn’t realize it and would not let the other cockatiels push him around. He had a big personality. He was happy, always eager to get onto my finger and jump onto my shoulder. I could scratch him, hold him cupped in my hands, kiss him all over, or preen his head feathers. Buzz was special. He lived as if nothing were wrong. He was my buddy, and I was happy to have him. I didn’t mind taking care of him because he was taking care of me.

Love Your Bird: Spencer the Survivor

Spencer (Black Headed Caique) is a Hurricane Katrina survivor from New Orleans in August 2005. He and his family lost everything so they moved to Houston to start over. Later Spencer’s family gave him up for adoption; in time he was given up for adoption 10 times causing him to be more aggressive and distrusting of people. In March 2009, I heard about him needing yet another new home so I flew to Houston, Texas to adopt him making me his 11th parront. Sometimes he can be meaner than a junkyard dog, his favorite friend is a cockatiel but ohhhh he loves me so much and I love him!

Love Your Bird: Koko and her Feathered and Non-Feathered Friends

Koko (Green Cheek Conure-Red Belly) knows she is part of the family. She eats with us, plays with us, travels with us. Her cage sits by a big window and every morning we put bread out for her bird friends to come. She calls them and shares her food. Her friends are Freckles, Sparkle, GiGi, Tiny, Peeps and Spooky. She has brought much love and playfulness into our home. She loves to give kisses and calls my husband ‘Frankie’ all day long! Wonder how she learned that! LOL!

Love Your Bird: Pepper the Talker

Pepper (African Grey) has so much personality. So funny. Talks up a storm, has such a large vocabulary. She is my baby girl. Pepper is also very special because she went missing for three days about four years ago. By God’s grace she was found. Made me a firm believer in prayer.

Love Your Bird: Hugs from Huey

I went through infertility treatments for eight years. I had several miscarriages and complications. My little guy was always a comfort. He would sit on my lap and let me hold him. Now my only child is six. Huey is now 12 and is still my baby. I love him lots!
