Love Your Bird: Maggie the Macaw

Years ago I bought an egg for a Harlequin Macaw and I’ve been raising Maggie
since the day she hatched. I’m her mom. She’s very much a part of our family and
interacts with each of us in our own special way. When my son was younger, he
would go in the bathroom to take a shower and she would often stand at the
bathroom door knocking and wanting to come in. She loves bath time and enjoys
being outside in the rain. We have a springer spaniel named Fraiser, whom she
loves. In fact, she now calls every dog Fraiser. She will often take an apple
from her cage and carrying it down to the floor to share it with Fraiser. She
enjoys watching sitcoms with me and she cracks up at the funny parts. She loves
to go camping and the whole campground will come to see her at our campsite. And
just like you do with your loved ones, every night before bed we exchange
bedtime kisses. She always whispers ‘night, night!’ – Jennifer P. in South
Carolina

Love Your Bird: Charlie the Sweetheart

Charlie is a very kind and sweet African Grey that came to the Baiata Bird
Sanctuary in Florida in November of 2016. Charlie immediately loved his
surroundings, which includes a screened gazebo for daytime play and a
comfortable birdhouse that is heated and air conditioned. Charlie also fell in
love with our female African Grey. While they do not sleep in the same cage,
they love each other and their cages are side by side. Charlie loves music and
people. Charlie is an older bird. We know that he was imported and suffered
nasal issues early in life. He also suffers from seizures and at one point had
up to 56 seizures a day. After consultation with an avian vet, tests and a CAT
scan, it was determined the cause of the seizures was a long-standing fungus. He
is now undergoing treatment for that. We love Charlie and want the best for him.

Love Your Bird: Meko the Comforting Cockatiel

Meko (a cockatiel) has been my fid for nearly nine years and is one of five
birds. These last few months have been the hardest in my life due to a rare
disorder called spasmodic dysphonia that makes talking very difficult.
Throughout this whole ordeal Meko has stayed at my side making me feel so much
better with kisses, cuddles, and chatter. He does not question why I sound
different and just goes along with it. My whole life might be changing in a new
direction but Meko has and always will be a constant and welcome presence in my
life. That’s why my fid is amazing. – Mary B. in California

Love Your Bird: Jazzy the Snuggle Bird

I was involved in a serious motorcycle accident and I lost the use of my left
arm. Jazzy, a Senegal, was there for me through thick and thin. She always
follows me around the house and she always wants to sit on my chest or shoulder.
She doesn’t care, she don’t judge you, she just wants to be close to you. I went
through a lot, but my little girl is still there. – Richard H. in Ontario

Love Your Bird: Ohia the Fid That Never Gives Up

I fell in love with Ohia (Lovebird) the day my husband and I found him/her
abandoned at our regional park. Our baby was undernourished and suffered splayed
legs. In three years, Ohia has proven to be a fighter and a motivator. Our baby
requests daily kisses and demands that no one give up on life’s difficult
challenges. Ohia is a leader, a protector, and on a few occasions a ‘teddy
bear.’ -Bernadette G. in Hawaii

Love Your Bird: Bob the Calming Conure

Bob use to be my therapy bird. He helped me with my anxiety. He never officially
was trained but he did keep me calm. Unfortunately, he did pass. But he was the
handsomest Sun Conure I know. – Angie B. in California

Love Your Bird: Rio the African Grey Meets His Soul Mate

God truly brought him to me for a reason. One day I just looked up and said,
‘God it would be nice to have someone, other than my stuffed animals, to talk to
and be able to cuddle at times!’ Who knew He would listen? A friend of mine one
day was talking about a bird she had that swore like a sailor! Then she messaged
me, asking if I knew someone that would like an African Grey? I told her to give
me a few weeks and I’ll check. Actually, I was thinking of my granddaughters,
but God had better plans! Then two weeks later I get a message from her, ‘When
can we bring him?’ WOW, I wasn’t ready for a bird, but I made room for him. He
came home to his forever home!! We did have a rough start, but we made it
through it ALL! Turns out he came with a background like mine, of abuse and
neglect. After finding that out, I knew why God gave him to me! We both can help
each other to heal! He is truly a wonderful, amazing bird! We are truly Soul
Mates! My bird protector! He has to approve everyone that visits, or you will be
bit! I love him so much! -Delores D. in Wisconsin
