Learn expert tips and solutions to help your dog find relief and stop the constant chewing.
Why Does My Dog Chew on His Leg?
How do I stop my dog from chewing on his leg? A dog chewing on his feet and legs is often a sign of allergies. A puppy biting paws and legs, it may be a sign of skin mites. If your dog keeps chewing leg, the best way to stop your dog from doing this is to meet with your veterinarian to determine the cause. Additionally, reducing your dog’s exposure to known allergens and washing your dog’s paws before bedtime with an itch-relief shampoo like EquiShield® IR can help soothe irritated skin and minimize discomfort from allergies or environmental irritants. If this is insufficient to help your dog’s comfort, see your veterinarian and speak to them about corticosteroids, such as Apoquel for dogs.
If you don’t put an end to this habit of dog leg chewing, it can lead to bacterial or yeast infections of their skin. Mites can be diagnosed in puppies and adult dogs with a test called a skin scraping your veterinarian can perform. Successful treatment with miticides can be prescribed.
