What is EPM?
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a disease caused by a parasite, Sarcocystis Neurona, that affects the central nervous system in horses through transmission from opossum feces. Horses can contract EPM from ingesting any contaminated feed/water and it is estimated over half the horses in the US are exposed to EPM at some point (AAEP, n.d.), but it is a very treatable disease if caught early.
