Regu-Mate® is a progestin that is given to horses to keep them from cycling or if they are already pregnant, to keep them from losing the foal.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: REGU-MATE® (altrenogest) is contraindicated for use in mares having a previous or current history of uterine inflammation. Pregnant women or women who suspect they are pregnant should not handle REGU-MATE. Women of childbearing age should exercise extreme caution when handling this product. Accidental absorption, such as via direct contract with the skin, could lead to a disruption of the menstrual cycle or prolongation of pregnancy. Vinyl, neoprene, or nitrile gloves must be worn by all persons who handle this product or who come in contact with equipment or surfaces contaminated by this product. For complete safety information please read label.
Side Effects: Common but not serious side effects include: mild increases in liver enzymes can rarely be seen. Your veterinarian will monitor for this.

Human Caution: It is recommended that certain people must NOT HANDLE this product: Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Anyone with blood clots or a history of blood clots.
Anyone with hardening of the arteries or a history of stroke. Women with breast cancer or a history of breast cancer. Women with estrogen dependent cancerous tumors. Women with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Women who have had tumors that developed while taking estrogens or oral contraceptives.
If you, or others that may handle this product, fit any of these categories, discuss with your veterinarian whether this drug can be safely used or if other treatments may be better.

Always wear gloves when handling this medication. When removing a dose, the liquid often drips down the side of the container and should be cleaned up safely. Detergent and water may be required for clean-up.

Warnings: This drug SHOULD NOT be used in patients that are to be used for food purposes, or that have an infected uterus (pyometra).
This drug should be used WITH CAUTION in patients: That are pregnant. Susceptible to or that have had chronic uterine infections in the past. That have liver disease.
If your animal matches any of these conditions, talk to your veterinarian about the possible risks of using the medication versus the benefits.

Overdoses can be very dangerous. Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

Disposal of Unused Prescription Medications

  1. Return unwanted or unused medications to Revival Animal Health in person, or visit www.disposemymeds.org to find a pharmacy near you.
  2. A secondary method of drug disposal is to remove the unwanted medication from any wrappers or containers and place it in a plastic bag with moist coffee grounds or cat litter. This can be disposed of in the regular garbage collection.
  3. Please do NOT dispose of unwanted meds down the drain or toilet, as this may eventually find its way into the human water supply.

Disposal of Medical Sharps

  1. When you're finished with the syringe and needle, do not try to recap, remove, bend or break the needle. This is where most injuries occur.
  2. Dispose the syringe and needle immediately in a nearby sharps container. All sharps must be deposited in a puncture-proof container. Make sure your storage location is child and animal proof.
  3. As with all product handling, make sure you wash your hands after handling medical sharps.

Disposal of Sharps Container

  1. When your sharps container is half-full, sift dry Portland Cement throughout the sharps. Fill the container with water, and rotate until the cement is mixed and the sharps have been distributed throughout the cement mixture. Let cement dry for 24 hours.
  2. Seal the lid of the container tightly and use duct tape to seal. Label the container "Livestock Sharps" to properly identify the contents.
  3. Dispose of the containers in accordance with your state's regulations.
