Puppy Milk Replacer and Nutrition Education
Sometimes mothers are unable to provide the life giving milk puppies need. A nursing mother may be absent or just unable to produce the quality or quantity of milk needed to sustain a newborn or fostered puppy's health requirements.

Optimal Nutrition for Puppies, Older or Stressed Dogs
Advanced nutritional puppy milk replacer formulas like Breeders' Edge Foster Care, Thomas Labs Immune Milk or Esbilac provide orphaned or rejected puppies palatable, easily digestible sources of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Milk replacers for puppies are fortified with vitamins, minerals and probiotics.

Nurturing Puppies with Milk Replacers
Puppies need a colostrum substitute like Breeders' Edge Nurture Mate in the first two weeks to replace the colostrum protection mom would give. Puppies are born with a sterile gut and mom seeds the puppy's gut with good bacteria while cleaning them. An orphan pup, after 48 hours of life, needs good bacteria; the solution is to feed a probiotic. Most quality milk replacers add probiotic or prebiotic to the formula to address this problem. You can also add probiotic in powder form to a milk replacer after it is mixed and heated. It is best to use a probiotic in the milk replacer for the first two weeks and anytime that a nursing puppy, orphan or not, has loose stool. GI upset is common in nursing and hand-fed puppies. Most diarrhea issues in the nursing puppy are from over eating, but a few doses of kaolin/pectin and a probiotic will solve this problem. If you need help, call us at 1-800-786-4750.
