Dental Care

Dental care for pets has received more attention in recent years.  By the age of four, more than 70% of domestic dogs show signs of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss, bacterial infections, and any number of periodontal diseases.  Gum disease in cats can lead to heart and kidney disease.  Good oral hygiene is now recognized as a must for pets.

Although dogs and cats rarely get cavities, they are prone to gum disease and excess tartar build-up.  Food particles and bacteria collect along the gumline forming plaque.  Routine home care can remove this plaque.

If plaque is not removed, minerals in the saliva combine with the plaque and form tartar which adheres strongly to the teeth.  Plaque starts to mineralize 3-5 days after it forms.  The tartar is irritating to the gums and causes gingivitis and bad breath.  If not removed, it can lead to periodontal disease which is very painful and can lead to loose teeth, abscesses, and bone loss or infection. 

Prevention and Treatment

• Feed a hard kibble food or biscuit once a day to help clean the teeth.
• Brush the teeth at least weekly.  Brush in a circular motion with a chlorhexidine toothpaste.
• Keep the folds of skin around the mouth clean and free of food with dental cleansers.
• Look for warning signs of gum disease such as bad breath, red, swollen gums, tarter or bleeding gums.
• Check for discolored, fractured or missing teeth and any bumps or masses.
• Avoid table scraps and sweet treats to prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
• Use dental toys, dental chews, rawhide chips, rope toys, etc.
• Visit your veterinarian regularly.
