Dental Care

Did you know that over 85% of adult dogs show signs of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss, bacterial infections, and periodontal diseases? And did you know that gum disease in cats can lead to heart and kidney disease? So, good oral hygiene is a must for pets.

Cats and dogs are prone to gum disease and excess tartar build-up. Food particles and bacteria collect along the gum line forming plaque. If plaque isn’t removed it starts to mineralize 3-5 days after it forms. Eventually, calculus forms on the tooth and acts as a protective barrier for plaque development. If left alone, it can lead to periodontal disease and can lead to loose teeth, abscesses, and bone loss or infection.

The best treatment is prevention! Follow these steps for promoting dental health.

Step 1: Look for warning signs
Watch for the signs of gum disease such as bad breath, red, swollen gums, tarter or bleeding gums. Are there any discolored, fractured or missing teeth?

Step 2: Chew on it
Chewing hard pet foods daily will help keep teeth clean. Give your pet a dental toys, dental chews, rawhide chips, or rope toys weekly also to help in the chewing action. Make sure you avoid giving table scraps and sweet treats – they promote plaque and tartar buildup.

Step 4: Prevention
Visit your veterinarian regularly. They’ll be able to spot the signs of dental disease before you can. Make this trip part of your normal pet health care schedule.
