Stress and Your Pet

Did you ever think your pet could suffer from stress just as we can? Recent studies have indicated that even the most pampered pets can encounter daily stressors that can affect their health over the long term. Feline lower urinary tract disease, inflammatory bowel syndrome, obesity, gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat), noise phobias and separation anxiety have all been linked to chronic stress in both dogs and cats (Luescher,2003).

Veterinarians have observed that overall stress levels for today's companion animals may be higher than the past. Granted, they don't worry about being preyed upon or starving to death, but new sources of stress such as boarding, long term crate confinement, inactivity, and noise all add up to stress. One issue is dogs and cats do not developed good defenses for today’s stresses that can't be avoided. There is reason to believe that the way a mammal responds to stress and chronic disease is directly related to their nutrient deficiencies, imbalances and toxicity.

  • The most important thing you can do for your pet is to provide balanced nutrition.
  • Secondly, give stressed pets a daily supplement to ensure they are replacing stress nutrient loss. Vitamin mineral supplements (DocRoy's® Daily Care Feline or Canine), maintain a healthy endocrine and nervous system.
  • Thirdly, use treats or a favorite toy to diffuse negative feelings associated with leaving. Only give these treats (Grizzly Salmon Fillet Treats or Rawhide bones for dogs) when you are leaving to replace negative with positive reinforcement.
  • Lastly, pheromone diffusers and sprays are effective stress reducers for both dogs (D.A.P®) and cats (Feliway®).

These are just a few basic steps you can take to help your pet cope with stress and live a longer happier life.
