Pet Healthcare Tip from Dr. Bramlage:
Dr. B, I just buy the paste horse de-wormer to do my dogs -- Fenbendazole is fenbendazole correct? It is much cheaper by my calculation. What is your opinion?
You are correct and dead wrong at the same time! Fenbendazole is the same no matter what form. The reason they put horse in apple paste is to get it down and they can not just salivate it out as they can liquid. Do not use in puppies under 12 weeks and never in tiny dogs (Chihuahua, Maltese, Yorkies) as the paste does not dissolve and they choke on it. I have never lost a puppy to paste de-wormer, but have had it in their lungs. Puppies need liquid or gel.
It's not cheaper! Last I calculated, the liquid was a bit cheaper than the granules, but the paste (more processing to get it in a paste form) was the most expensive per gram of fenbendazole.
You are likely using the wrong dose - that is why it is cheaper - you can't use the horse dose.
Horses: 5mg/kg/one time
Dogs/Cats: 50mg/kg/3 days in a row
That's 10 times the horse dose. Dogs are not little horses!
In fact for mini horses, people use the dog granules to de-worm their horse. Mini's can be tough to de-worm and they just put granules in feed. A 40 pound dog dose has 3 packets and one packet will do 400 pounds of horse - you get 3 in the box - they can do 3-400 lbs minis with one 40 lb dog box.
Safeguard horse tube on dogs works, but a 1000 lb Horse tube will do a 100 lb dog for one day and you need 3 tubes (1 daily) to get the 3 day dose! Expensive and not easy to get a tube down daily.
Why 3 days in dogs/cats? What you put in a horse comes out the other end in 3-5 days - de-wormer stays in the gut longer so no redosing is necessary. What you put in a dog/cat comes out the other end in 24 hours - we redose for 3 days.
I hope that makes sense, and it's a common question I get. It costs more to make the horse apple paste - not cheaper.
